A Community Arts Program for Adults with Disabilities

Art From Within is a vibrant arts program for adults with disabilities, housed at the West Edge Factory. In a community workshop setting, artists come together to explore themes through clay, printmaking, mosaic sculpture, and a wide variety of 2D painting and drawing mediums.

The program runs annually from March through December and culminates in a public exhibition held in the Turret Gallery, where artists showcase both individual pieces and collaborative works. Each group session encourages skill-building, experimentation, and connection.

Since its launch in March 2023 with just nine artists, Art From Within has grown to include 20 artists across three groups, each of which meets monthly to create, learn, and grow together. The program continues to retain all original participants, reflecting the strong sense of purpose, belonging, and joy shared by everyone involved.

Mission
Statement

Art From Within is dedicated to empowering adults with disabilities through meaningful art education, creative exploration, and authentic community. We believe in the capabilities of every individual and approach each artist with respect, encouragement, and the same high standards we would offer any learner—always mindful of individual needs and unique modes of expression.

Through monthly workshops that blend fine art instruction with process-based discovery, we create a space for learning, growth, and self-expression. Our curriculum emphasizes foundational skills, experimentation with diverse mediums, and opportunities to build on previous learning. Artists are supported in taking ownership of their work, developing their voices, and being seen not just as participants—but as artists.

Our year culminates in a public exhibition that honors each individual’s creative journey and the collective spirit of the community we’ve built together.

Our Values

  • Respect with Expectation
We honor each artist’s individuality while holding space for growth. We believe that adults with disabilities deserve the same level of respect, challenge, and opportunity as any artist, with support tailored to their unique pace and process.

  • Creative Integrity
We teach and uphold the foundations of fine art, offering meaningful instruction in diverse mediums. Every project is designed to engage artists in learning, reflection, and the joy of creating something truly their own.

  • Process Over Product
While we celebrate each final work of art, we value the journey of making even more. Our sessions focus on being present, taking time to process, and finding fulfillment in exploration and discovery.

  • Dignity Through Inclusion
We do not define our artists by disability, but by their creativity, perspective, and voice. We foster an environment where everyone is treated as a capable and valued member of the creative community.

  • Patience and Presence
We give space—emotionally and physically—for each artist to work at their own rhythm. We understand that true expression takes time, and we cultivate an environment grounded in empathy and attentiveness.

  • Community and Connection
Art is a bridge. We encourage collaboration, shared learning, and social engagement, building a vibrant, inclusive space where relationships flourish alongside creativity.
